Misremembering

How do we tell when we're remembering bad information? What happens inside our brains when we create a false memory; when our hippocampus remembers something incorrectly and our prefrontal cortex goes along with it, filling in the blanks?

Misremembering arises when totally messed up information from the outside world reaches our senses in the forms of chemical and physical stimuli and then sinks back into our brain's storage centers where it is later recalled as conscious BS.

BS is the stuff we prefer to remember rather than admitting we weren't paying attention.
